Emmeline was gracious enough to share her current project with us. She was asked to create a series of fun birthday cards and a poster.

“It certainly is the season of greetings cards, but for this project I’ve put aside the images of baubles, reindeers and festively clad bearded men and stepped into a world of birthday cakes, balloons and general celebratory shenanigans. I was asked by my agents Advocate-Art to create a series of prospective birthday card designs which could appeal to children and adults, boys and girls – a wide audience basically. So far I’ve sketched up four designs and I’m currently working two of them (in tandem) into finals. They’re all quite different, but are tied together by the theme of celebration, fun and of course cake.

With the two designs I’m currently working on (keep in mind they’re WIP and a little scruffy!) I’ve used my favourite black ink brush pen for the linework and my Wacom graphics tablet to colour on Photoshop. My materials depend on the project and the visual effect I want for the final piece, I often use pencil and gouache paint for a more traditional and rich textured approach.

Keeping with the birthday theme, I’ve also just finished this poster for Storytellers, Inc bookshop in Lancashire. Saturday the 3rd December is their first birthday and they’re hosting a big bash full of fun, games, prizes, books and workshops. I’m going to be there doing a reading of my newest picture book The Flyaway Blanket, an illustration demonstration and an art workshop with the children. I might even get my face painted.
